Sports and Leisure Vocabulary

  • Soccer (or football) – a sport played between two teams of eleven players, where the objective is to score goals by kicking a ball into the opposing team’s goalpost.
  • Basketball – a sport played between two teams of five players, where the objective is to score points by throwing a ball through a hoop that is mounted at each end of the court.
  • Football (American) – a sport played between two teams of eleven players, where the objective is to score points by carrying or throwing a ball across the opposing team’s goal line.
  • Baseball – a sport played between two teams of nine players, where the objective is to score runs by hitting a ball with a bat and then running around a diamond-shaped field.
  • Tennis – a sport played between two players (singles) or four players (doubles), where the objective is to hit a small rubber ball over a net and into the opponent’s side of the court.
  • Volleyball – a sport played between two teams of six players, where the objective is to score points by hitting a ball over a net and into the opposing team’s side of the court.
  • Golf – a sport where players use clubs to hit a small ball into a series of holes on a course.
  • Ice Hockey – a sport played on ice between two teams of six players, where the objective is to score goals by hitting a rubber puck into the opposing team’s goal.
  • Swimming – a sport that includes various competitions, such as freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, where the objective is to complete a set distance in the shortest amount of time.
  • Track and Field – a sport that includes various events such as running, jumping, and throwing, where the objective is to achieve the best performance in each event.
  • Rugby – a sport played between two teams of fifteen players, where the objective is to score points by carrying or kicking an oval-shaped ball across the opposing team’s goal line.
  • Handball – a sport played by two teams of seven players, where the objective is to score goals by throwing a small ball into the opposing team’s goalpost.
  • Weightlifting – a sport that involves lifting weights in various exercises such as the snatch and clean and jerk, where the objective is to lift the most weight in each exercise.
  • boxing – a sport where two fighters wear gloves and punch each other in a ring, where the objective is to knock out the opponent or win on points.
  • wrestling – a sport where two fighters grapple each other wearing special clothing and try to pin their opponent’s shoulders to the mat.
