House and Home Vocabulary

  • Apartment – a set of rooms for living in, typically in a building containing a number of such sets
  • Bathroom – a room containing a bath or shower and usually a washbasin and toilet
  • Bedroom – a room for sleeping in
  • Carpet – a thick, soft covering for a floor
  • Ceiling – the upper surface inside a room, on the top of the walls
  • Chimney – a structure of brick or stone built to carry smoke and gases away from a fire or furnace
  • Closet – a small room or cabinet used for storage
  • Cushion – a soft pad, typically filled with feathers or foam rubber, used to make a piece of furniture more comfortable
  • Curtain – a piece of cloth hung up at the window to keep out the sun or as a decoration
  • Dining room – a room in a house or apartment where meals are eaten
  • Door – a movable barrier used to block off an entrance, typically made of wood or metal
  • Fireplace – an open recess in a wall, typically in a living room, where a fire can be lit
  • Floor – the lower surface of a room on which one may walk
  • Furniture – the movable articles in a room or an establishment that make it fit for living or working
  • Garden – an area of land, often near a house, used for growing flowers, fruit, or vegetables
  • Kitchen – a room or area for cooking and preparing food
  • Lamp – a device for providing artificial light
  • Roof – the top covering of a building, typically made of tiles or slates
  • Staircase – a set of steps leading from one floor of a building to another
  • Table – a piece of furniture with a flat top and one or more legs, used as a surface for working at, eating from, or on which to place things.
