Describing the advantages and disadvantages of living in a big city

Objective: The student will be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of living in a big city.

Materials: chalkboard/whiteboard, markers

Procedure:

Introduction (5 minutes):
• Discuss the definition of a ‘big city’
• Explain that this lesson will focus on the advantages and disadvantages of living in a big city

Part 1: Advantages (15 minutes):
• Write ‘advantages’ on the board
• Ask the student to brainstorm a list of advantages of living in a big city
• Go through the list, discussing each advantage and why it is beneficial
• Discuss the various job opportunities and the larger salary that may be available in a big city

Part 2: Disadvantages (15 minutes):
• Write ‘disadvantages’ on the board
• Ask the student to brainstorm a list of disadvantages of living in a big city
• Go through the list, discussing each disadvantage and why it is detrimental
• Discuss the higher cost of living, traffic congestion, pollution, and safety issues

Conclusion (5 minutes):
• Discuss how a big city can be a great place to live, but also has its disadvantages
• Go over the pros and cons that have been discussed
• Allow the student to ask any questions they may have
